Today we honor and celebrate the life of a beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend - Victor Bernard Hodge, affectionately known as Victor B. He was a man whose spirit touched all of those around him.
Victor B was born August 14, 1959, in Alcoa, TN. He attended Alcoa High School C/O ’77 and ’78. In 1978, he joined the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant until he was honorably discharged in 1980 for medical reasons.
After honorably serving his country, Victor continued to show incredible strength and courage, navigating years of dialysis treatment with grace and a positive attitude. Over the past 42 years, he became like family to the staff at DCI Maryville, leaving a lasting impact through his resilience, kindness, and the relationships he built with those who cared for him.
Even while managing dialysis, Victor B never stopped living his life to the fullest. His lifelong passion for racing motocross bikes, motorcycles, and cars (including his legendary ’72 red Ford Pinto) began in childhood and remained a constant source of joy throughout his life. He could often be found tearing down the back roads of Alcoa and Knoxville, engine roaring and spirit free, doing what he loved most and living life on his own terms.
Victor B was a well-respected member of the pool community, known for his sharp aim and even sharper wit. A true master of the game, he could read the table with ease, always calling his shots and never shying away from a one-pocket challenge or a tough match. He enjoyed every aspect of pool from breaking and running the table to watching matches and mentoring others, always sharing his love for the game, his knowledge of cue control, and his gift for helping others improve their stroke and confidence.
Victor B gave generously to his community and will be remembered for all the wonderful things he did to serve others. He consistently showed up for his community by hosting various events such as The Hall/Old Field Community Gathering, Coats for the Cold, and Feast in the Street. Victor B also regularly supported the youth at the MLK Center by providing pizza, hot dogs, and snacks. He was known for countless individual acts of kindness that reflected his generous spirit. His commitment to others was felt in many ways, and his impact will be remembered across the community forever.
Preceded in death by: his grandmother, Rosalee Hodge “Ms. Whitechild”, and brother, Kenneth “Gabe” Smith.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Valeria Hodge; mother, Bettye Jo Brackin; children, Victor (Maggie) Hodge, Nicholas Hodge, Jayde Hodge, Darrell (Charlene) Bond, Ande’ (Rashaad) Woods; and children he loved as his own, Kiecess Goins and Victoria Lundy.
He is also survived by his siblings: Kathy (David) Cox, Joseph “Cosell” (Shelley) Hodge, James “Smiley” (Kimberly) Hodge, and Samaria (Richard) Gallman; 19 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins too numerous to name. He is also survived by his god-sister, Talitha “Ray” Walker, and lifelong friends, including James “JR” Sudderth, and countless others who loved him dearly.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to DCI Maryville for over 40 years of dedicated care and compassion.
