Erma Dean

Erma Charles Dean, 88, passed peacefully in Maryville, TN on January 23, 2024. Erma was born in Alcoa, TN, September 12, 1935, to Ralph J. Miller Sr. and Emma Miller. She was a 1953 graduate of Hall High School and earned her nursing degree from St. Philip’s College Nursing School in 1973.

As a military wife, Erma traveled the country and world with her beloved husband of 67 years, Griffin Dean. Thanks to the Air Force, the family found itself at home in Blytheville, Arkansas; Seville, Spain; San Antonio, Texas; and Riverside, California before Erma and Griffin finally returned to their hometown of Alcoa. While raising four children, Erma pursued her passion for nursing. She dedicated 25 years to the profession and took pride in providing exceptional care to elderly patients.

Upon her return to Tennessee, Erma became a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church where she directed the young liturgical dancers and served as a valued member of the Board of Trustees.

She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Wilma Miller, Ralph J. Miller Jr., Peggy Ann Miller-Hill, and nephews, Terrence Major and Charles Major.

Erma is survived by her devoted husband, Griffin Dean; loving children, Kimberly Dean, David Dean (Wanda Bowman), Kevin (Gail) Dean, and Lisa (Robert) James; siblings, Joyce Major and Gary (Patricia) Miller; a host of loving sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, ten grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and lifetime friends.

Celebration of Life will be held at Bethel Baptist Church on February 7, 2024.

Visitation: 10:00 a.m.

Services:    11:00 a.m.

Interment: East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery Knoxville.

The body may be viewed Tuesday February 6, 2024 Noon- 6:00pm at Foothills Funeral Home.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Foothills Funeral Home.


Erma’s indomitable spirit and legacy of love will forever be cherished. May she rest in eternal peace.
